Bike Tour Through Mountainous Country Roads To Lake Lucerne
The scenic drive to Engelberg is one to behold, but riding a bike (mostly downhill) back down to Lake Lucerne is an experience you will never forget. Riding on the bike allows you to not just view the sites but to experience the sites. The first 3 miles are on the main road (Switzerland is very bike friendly) and then we ride along a mountain river through the valley back to Lake Lucerne. We will stop as often as you like to take in the majestic views, take photos, get refreshments, or simply take in the surrounding beauty and rest. Along the way we pass historical sites such as a 17th century manor house and a 400 year Höchhus (historic house), “a truly majestic example of a Central Swiss manor house”.
Ascent – 50 m (165 feet)
Descent – 600 m (1970 feet)
Time on Bike – Avg 1 1/2 (not including stops)
Fitness Level – Easy – But you should be comfortable on a bike and riding on roads with cars (mostly the first miles)
ITINERARY
We will meet at the Lucerne train station and take a 40-minute train ride up to a mountain village nestled in the Alps where we will pick up our bikes. We can start the ride off by visiting a 12th-century monastery and the Showcase Cheese Factory, where you can watch them making cheese and pick up snacks for the ride.
The First 4 miles we will ride along the main street where we will turn off and follow back country roads following a mountainous river back to Lake Lucerne. Along the way, we can stop as often as you like to take photographs, buy snacks or simply enjoy a little time soaking in majestic surroundings.
Once we are back to Lake Lucerne we will take a 20-minute train ride back to Lucerne
* If you want a work out we can do this trip in reverse, or ride both ways.
