How To Avoid the Crowds

Avoiding the Selfie Stick Crowds (SSC)

Just like any tourist hot spot there will be crowds at the more popular areas.  So how do you experience Switzerland without getting whapped in the face by a selfie stick?

One of the easiest and cheapest ways to avoid the crowds is simple – walk.  Most of the tourists will stay on the beaten path.  Therefore, planning a little hike into your plans will help you get you away from the crowds.  Between busses, trains, gondolas and boats there are many ways to do a round trip and getting away from the crowds.

Minimize your time at the spots that are the most advertised.  Switzerland is chock full of mountains, lakes and beautiful vistas.  The locals don’t always go to those heavily advertised spots.  Do some deeper research and find somewhere off the beaten path.  If you see bus companies advertising a location, then you can count on encountering the SSC.  For, Example – Mt Titlis is an easy train ride from Luzern, and heavily advertised.  It is also accessible to tour bus operators.  Encountering the SSC is almost a guarantee.  So, what do you do if you want to see the glacier, but don’t want to be stuck with the SSC all day?  Explore the hiking opportunities, get off at an alternative stop, research other activities in the area.

Just because it’s the most advertised spot doesn’t mean it’s the best spot.  There are numerous vistas, viewpoints and hikes.  So, think outside of the box and don’t be afraid to take a chance.  In Switzerland it’s hard to go terribly wrong…as long as you make sure you can get down off of the mountain.
